This Week's Episode........
"Heroes at Large!"
May - 2006
Before we get all chatty:
Hello all! We are safely back from the middle east and we are pleased to release the details on this year’s first annual Action Hero Boot Camp! We are also pleased to announce the formation of the brand new Action Hero Arts Association. Read on... this episode is gonna be great!
Thanks to everyone who called in and listened to the Hack and Slash Hotline while we were over there entertaining the troops on our sixth tour of Operation Swashbuckle. Watch the Archives page for pictures, stories, video and phone calls recorded from the tour. It will be growing this summer. If you haven’t called the Hotline yet, give it a try. Put it on speed dial. We’re just getting started having fun with it. We’ll update it now and again depending on what we’re up to. The number is (703) 229-1700.
We were pleased to welcome back Todd Key for his fourth OpSwash tour and David Vanderveer for his first. We went all over Iraq this time and into the heart of the "International Zone" in Baghdad! This tour was in fact the most dangerous yet but it was also the most satisfying. We actually met the commander of the Iraqi Air Force while waiting for our UH-60 to fly us across town in Baghdad! 3-Star Lieutenant General Abdul Qaadur (Kah-deer) was so very gracious and posed for pictures with us.
Here’s the whole story: we were sitting on the LZ waiting for our Blackhawk to come take us to the next base and we noticed a bunch of tough looking Iraqi’s in red berets congregating around a vehicle. Our escort, Captain Michael Sapp who must have kissed the Blarney Stone several times walked right up to them and won them over with his smile and confidence. He asked who they were escorting and they told him. Soon we found ourselves standing outside the open door of a tinted-windowed vehicle with a graciously smiling man emerging from it. He thanked us... (US... mind you... the goofy comedian guys!!!)... for our help in dealing with his country’s problems. And patiently posed for many snapshots with everyone in our group. Thanks LTG Qaadur!
We had many adventures, including riding in the chase car behind a U2 spy plane as it landed and some very fancy helicopter flying by our UH60 crew. Check the archives, we hope to have footage up there soon!
One of the highlights of our most recent tour was a visit to an orphanage in Djbouti, Africa. There is both a boys and girls orphanage and the Chaplain’s office in Camp Lemonier keeps soldiers involved with the kids at both. We requested a visit to the orphanage and did a little show for them out on their basketball court. The kids were a lot of fun and they all ended up with Hack and Slash hats when we were done.
We saw an opportunity to help out and we wanted to include all of you H&S fans. Hack and Slash will be adopting the orphanage. Here’s how it works. These kids need all kinds of things. Their country is not very wealthy and the military can help us get stuff to them. Please read this letter from RP1 Stoneking, Army Chaplain’s Assistant at Camp Lemonier, explaining how you can help. If you want to make a difference for these kids, please give it a read and consider helping out!
The brand new Action Hero Arts Association (AHAA!) and Hack and Slash are proud to present the first 2006 Action Hero Boot Camp! Join hack and Slash August 18-20 for an extended weekend in the mountains of Virginia for some good action-hero fun. Swordfighting, Bullwhip Cracking, Tactical Shooting and more! This is going to be a fun event so don’t miss it. Visit our Action Hero Boot Camp page for more details!
